Since 2010, Haleh Gallery has been working on the development of its curatorial program with a focus on:  establishing a dialogue between the cultures of the art world; building a bridge between art from East and West; and spanning an arc from traditional to experimental media.

The anniversary exhibition CHIAROSCURO reflects the diversity of artistic expression and the different ways in which artists explore in their works the theme of “monochromy”. The exhibition title CHIAROSCURO is a reference to art history, where light and dark contrasts have always played a crucial role. By focusing on light and dark in painting and graphic arts, the viewers of chiaroscuro art can easily detach themselves from the colours of the objects. The abstract representation of the objects, is able to move the experience of its form into the spotlight. With the concentration on pure form, not only the underlying artistic structures become more visible, but also the pictorial content of the individual works moves further into the horizon of experience.

In her black and white photo etchings, Annegret Soltau, a pioneer of feminist art in Germany, visualizes in her complex self-portraits physical processes. The artist Hassan Massoudy often finds his artistic inspiration in poetry, which he transforms into contemporary art works by means of classical Arabic calligraphy. The transformation of images and metaphors from poetry into canvas is also an important artistic strategy for Katayoun Rouhi. Rouhi’s artistic works oscillate between painting and poetry. Poetry is the inner, invisible form of her works, while painting represents the outer and visible manifestation of her art.

Sara Sarshar’s sculpture “” is a contemporary translation of the chiaroscuro principle of painting into sculpture. The reduction of colour gives the work its own dramaturgy and a new urgency. Josef Lang’s sculptures also persist in the ambivalence and ambiguity between anthropomorphic forms and abstract objects.

This overview of the exhibited artworks demonstrates that CHIAROSCURO is the unifying element of the artworks’ diversity. Despite or perhaps, due to the artworks’ Chiaroscuro, the exhibition provides exciting and thought-provoking image contents.
